So you’ve got a few quotes, and they’re all different. Some companies have allowed for thousands of dollars worth of work that other builders haven’t even mentioned. Now’s the time for you make your sales people earn their commission. Ask questions. If a builder hasn’t allowed for something, it’s possible it forms part of their base price. If a builder assures you something another builder has allowed for isn’t needed, ask them why. Ask the builder how often they’ve built in your area or on land with similar problems to yours- you can use their experience to your advantage.

Keep asking questions until you’re satisfied with the answers. While no builder can absolutely fix their site costs, they can give you a very accurate estimate based on the information you give them. And remember this is all only temporary – once you’re in your beautiful new house, you’ll never have to worry about what’s supporting the slab or how thermally efficient your windows are ever again!
